In Information Technology, a backup or the process of backing up refers to making copies of data so that these additional copies may be used to restore the original after a data loss event. The verb form is back up in two words, whereas the noun is backup (often used like an adjective in compound nouns).[1]
Backups have two distinct purposes. The primary purpose is to recover data as a reaction to data loss, be it by data deletion or corrupted data. Data loss is a very common experience of computer users. 67% of internet users have suffered serious data loss.[2] The secondary purpose of backups is to recover data from a historical period of time within the constraints of a user-defined data retention policy, typically configured within a backup application for how long copies of data are required. Though backups popularly represent a simple form of disaster recovery, and should be part of a disaster recovery plan, by themselves, backups should not alone be considered disaster recovery. [3] Not all backup systems and/or backup applications are able to reconstitute a computer system, or in turn other complex configurations such as a computer cluster, active directory servers, or a database server, by restoring only data from a backup.
Since a backup system contains at least one copy of all data worth saving, the data storage requirements are considerable. Organizing this storage space and managing the backup process is a complicated undertaking. A data repository model can be used to provide structure to the storage. In the modern era of computing there are many different types of data storage devices that are useful for making backups. There are also many different ways in which these devices can be arranged to provide geographic redundancy, data security, and portability.
Before data is sent to its storage location, it is selected, extracted, and manipulated. Many different techniques have been developed to optimize the backup procedure. These include optimizations for dealing with open files and live data sources as well as compression, encryption, and de-duplication, among others. Many organizations and individuals try to have confidence that the process is working as expected and work to define measurements and validation techniques. It is also important to recognize the limitations and human factors involved in any backup scheme.

Click on the "Advanced Search" link to the side of the search box.
 
  1. Fill in your desired query in the following fields:
    • The first area in the advanced search page is highlighted in blue. This is where you enter the search terms.
      • "With all of the words": In this field, you enter words that will ALL show up in the results. For example, if you search "George Washington" (without the quotes) then you will get results that have the words "George" and "Washington" both in the same result, but they don't necessarily have to be consecutive.
      • "With the exact phrase": Here you enter a phrase that you want to show up in the results. These words will be consecutive. For example, if you search "George Washington" (without the quotes) you will only find the words "George" and "Washington" consecutive to each other, as in "George Washington is sometimes referred to as the father of our country" as opposed to "George and I went visited some family in Washington the previous weekend."
      • "With at least one of the words": Entering in the field exclusively will get you results similar to the normal search function. The results must contain at least one word that you have entered. For example, a search query "George Washington" will get you results that contain the word "George", the word "Washington", and or both.
    • Further down the page with no colored highlight, an option reads "Language". Looking to the right, you see a pull-down menu with the selected option, "Any Language". If you pull down the menu, you will find a vast selection of languages that you can limit your search to.
    • The next option allows you to choose what file format you want to show up in your searches. Files you can choose from are those such as PDF, HTML, or Word. And, when you choose a file format, you can choose to only include files of that format, or to exclude such files.
    • The subsequent field allows you to narrow down your search to pages that have been updated in the past year, six months, three months, or anytime.
    • The next option only lets pages that contain numbers in a range that you decide show up in the results. For example, if you choose to only allow pages with the numbers 2-5, pages that contain the any of the numbers "2", "3", "4", and "5" appear in the search results.
    • Next, you can enter a specific domain name and choose to find results exclusively from the site or exclude results from that domain.
    • The next option allows you to choose the usage rights of the results that you want.
    • The final option allows you to have a filter on your results that helps to cut out the inappropriate results.
